Both games dropped their early access labels about five weeks apart, so the Enshrouded vs Valheim question is finally a comparison of finished games. One sends you across a procedurally generated Viking afterlife, the other into a handcrafted kingdom swallowed by fog. The real question is whether you want a world to conquer or a base to design.
Best for Builders and Big Groups
Enshrouded
Bottom LineThe pick if you want a handcrafted world, a huge toolkit for designing bases and room for up to 16 players, and can live without crossplay for now.
Bottom LineThe better fit if you want a fresh procedural world, ocean voyages and crossplay across PC and consoles, as long as a ten-player cap works for your group.
World and Exploration: Valheim Is Different Every Time
Valheim generates a new world from a seed, so every save has its own map, biome layout and boss route. The world is a Viking afterlife, and progress is gated by biomes and bosses rather than by a long quest list. Only a few optional sidequests exist, so exploration drives almost everything. Sailing is a big part of that.
Valheim: 1.0 & Deep North â Release Date Reveal Trailer
Enshrouded uses a handcrafted map instead. The kingdom of Embervale is built around the Shroud, a corrupting fog you push back as you progress, and main story quests guide you from region to region. Fast travel points unlock as you find them, while Valheim relies on portals you craft yourself, with limits on which items can pass through. If you like a world that was designed place by place, Enshrouded delivers it. If you want every new save to feel unfamiliar, Valheim wins this round.
Building: Enshrouded Gives You the Bigger Toolbox
Both games let you build almost anywhere, and both include terraforming and grid snap. Enshrouded goes further, with blocks in many shapes and sizes, plenty of furniture, NPC villagers who move into your base and even tools for adding decay to walls. A glider also makes moving around a tall build easier.
Enshrouded – 1.0 Release Date Reveal
Valheim builds are more rule-driven. Structural integrity means a roof or tower needs proper support, and furniture and decor feed a comfort value that gives a rested buff. That makes Valheim bases feel like puzzles, while Enshrouded bases feel like a sandbox with few limits. Players who spend more time decorating than fighting will usually prefer Enshrouded.
Survival Rules and Difficulty: Different Kinds of Pressure
Neither game is built around constant starvation. Valheim has no thirst or hunger meter, but food buffs are essential for health and stamina. Enshrouded has adjustable thirst and hunger, switched off by default. Death is also handled differently. In Valheim you lose skill progress and can recover your items from a gravestone, while in Enshrouded you leave a gravestone behind with no XP loss.
Valheim adds pressures that Enshrouded skips. Raids can hit your base, skills level through use and it has mounts, while Enshrouded has no raids or mounts. Enshrouded levels you through combat and exploration, with each level granting skill points to spend on abilities. Valheim also offers a creative mode, and Enshrouded offers a photo mode. Both include dungeons, fishing, farming and taming, and both let you adjust difficulty.
If you want the game to push back, pick Valheim. If you want to relax into a build, Enshrouded asks less of you.
Co-op, Crossplay and Platforms: Valheim Reaches More Players
Enshrouded supports 1 to 16 players, and Valheim supports 1 to 10. For a big friend group, that gap alone can decide it.
Valheim has crossplay between PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and it is also on Mac and Linux through Steam. Its 1.0 release arrived on September 9, 2026. Enshrouded reached 1.0 on October 15, 2026 on PC and PlayStation 5, with an Xbox version planned for spring 2027. Crossplay is planned for a future update. There is no official mod support in either game.
Steam Reviews and PC Requirements
Valheim has the stronger and much larger review base, while Enshrouded asks for a more capable PC. Enshrouded lists a GTX 1060 or RX 580 with 6 GB of VRAM, 16 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5-6400 or Ryzen 5 1500X. Valheim lists a GeForce GTX 950 or Radeon HD 7970, 8 GB of RAM and a quad core at 2.6 GHz.

And the Winner Is…
WinnerValheim
Enshrouded is the better builder. It has more room for friends, a handcrafted world with a real story thread and a toolkit that makes bases look great. Still, Valheim is the one to start with for most players. It has far better Steam reviews from a much larger audience, runs on a modest PC, comes with crossplay and keeps every new world feeling fresh through procedural maps and sailing. It also pushes back with raids and bosses, so progress feels earned. In the Enshrouded vs Valheim matchup, pick Enshrouded if your group has more than ten people or you mostly care about designing a base. Pick Valheim if you want exploration, challenge and the widest platform support.
Which One Should You Play? Final Thoughts on Enshrouded vs Valheim
Enshrouded vs Valheim is less a ranking than a choice of fantasy. Valheim is the survival game to pick for voyages, raids and a world that changes with every seed. Enshrouded is the one for builders, bigger squads and anyone who wants a handcrafted adventure with a story to follow. If you want something harsher, our Rust vs DayZ comparison covers two tougher survival games.
I'm Sean, and I write the comparisons on GameCuki. I cover anything gamers weigh up before buying: consoles and handhelds, PC components and gaming laptops, monitors, controllers, headsets and accessories, plus subscriptions and services like Game Pass and PlayStation Plus. I put both options on the same checklist, using official specs, professional reviews and owner feedback, and I only mention what owners say when at least two of them report the same thing. Every comparison ends with one clear verdict and the type of player each option suits. I don't accept free products or payment from brands, and what I write comes from research, not my own use of the products. You can read my full process on our How We Review page.
