Price and Platforms: Stardew Valley Costs Half as Much

On Steam, Stardew Valley sells for $14.99 and Coral Island for $29.99. Stardew also runs almost everywhere: Windows, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita, iOS, Android and Switch 2. Coral Island is on Windows, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and the Nintendo Switch version that was planned is in doubt after its first publisher, Humble Games, closed in July 2024.

Visuals: Coral Island Is the Prettier Game

Stardew Valley is a 16-bit pixel game seen from above, and it has a warm look of its own. Coral Island is full 3D with a bright, saturated island and a Merfolk Kingdom under the sea. If you play farm sims for the atmosphere, this round goes to Coral Island.

Story and Characters: Coral Island Has a Clearer Plot

Coral Island sends you back to Starlet Town, where an oil spill and a drilling company called Pufferfish Corporation threaten the island. Restoring the town and its reefs gives the whole game a goal, and the cast includes diverse character designs and romance options that include LGBTQ partners. Stardew Valley starts with your grandfather’s overgrown farm and lets you decide what matters, from rebuilding the Community Center to going with Joja. The villagers have distinct personalities, and 12 of them can be married.

Multiplayer: Both Offer Co-op

Stardew Valley added multiplayer after launch and supports up to four players. Coral Island only gained co-op in its 1.2 update in August 2025, and Steam lists it as cross-platform multiplayer. If friends are the reason you are shopping, either game works (more picks for playing together are in our couch co-op games list), and Stardew is the cheaper way to get everyone in.

Content and Longevity: Stardew Valley Has the Depth

Stardew Valley has been updated for years and had its biggest update in 1.6, which pushed IGN to re-rate it 10/10 in July 2024. It also has an active modding scene. Full playthroughs can run past 200 hours. Coral Island is a newer game with a smaller catalog of updates, though it adds a Merfolk Kingdom to explore under the sea. Neither game is short, but Stardew currently gives you more to chase.

If you want to see them side by side, this head-to-head video covers both.

And the Winner Is…

WinnerStardew Valley

Coral Island wins on looks and has the more direct story, and its co-op and Merfolk Kingdom make it a lovely second farm. Stardew Valley still suits most people better. It costs half as much on Steam, runs on nearly every device you own, has far more years of content behind it and carries a 98% player rating. Start here if farm sims are new to you or you want the safest buy. Pick Coral Island instead if 3D visuals matter more than depth, or if you have already finished Stardew and want something fresh with the same cozy loop.

Bio

I'm Sean, and I write the comparisons on GameCuki. I cover anything gamers weigh up before buying: consoles and handhelds, PC components and gaming laptops, monitors, controllers, headsets and accessories, plus subscriptions and services like Game Pass and PlayStation Plus. I put both options on the same checklist, using official specs, professional reviews and owner feedback, and I only mention what owners say when at least two of them report the same thing. Every comparison ends with one clear verdict and the type of player each option suits. I don't accept free products or payment from brands, and what I write comes from research, not my own use of the products. You can read my full process on our How We Review page.
